Named for B. K. S. Iyengar, who developed this form of yoga in the 1970s, Iyengar Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga that emphasizes the importance of breath control and precision when moving through the postures. Special attention is paid to the anatomical details of alignment in each posture. Postures are often held for long periods, sometimes modified with props, so that every detail can be identified and addressed.
This form of yoga is good for cultivating a deeper awareness of the body and its movements, as well as for building strength, stability, and flexibility. It can also serve a therapeutic function in the treatment of some physical conditions.
