Power yoga is an intense, fast-moving style of yoga that will make you sweat. It is a fitness-based vinyasa practice. “Vinyasa” has several meanings, but in this context, it is a style of yoga with a dynamic flow from posture to posture. As an offshoot of Ashtanga yoga, power yoga has many of the same characteristics and benefits, including building internal heat, stress reduction, and increased stamina, strength, and flexibility.

Things to Know about Power Yoga

Coined in the 1990s, the term “power yoga” is often associated with the "gym yoga" trend. The practice continues to show up in various forms in different yoga studios, and today there are countless variations of power yoga classes, including classes held in over-heated rooms.

At Red Diamond Yoga, our expert instructors take Vinyasa yoga classes to a new level, and we never overheat our studios or add humidity. Our studios are heated to the perfect temperature for flexibility, a comfortable 82 degrees. The motions include a flow of postures and breath, including standing, balancing, core work, hip openers, shoulder openers, backbends, forward holds, balances, and inversions, all in a smooth, flowing sequence, set to energizing music. If you are looking for some fun, energetic power yoga resident absolutely enjoy, come to Red Diamond Yoga.

About Power Yoga

"Power Yoga" is simply a popular name for an athletic style of Vinyasa yoga, but has some common themes:

  • It has roots in Ashtanga yoga: Ashtanga is a dynamic, physically-demanding yoga practice synchronizing breath and movement to produce internal heat to purify and strengthen. It builds core strength, tones the body, and makes you sweat. Power yoga takes its cue from Ashtanga.
  • It moves fast: In traditional Ashtanga practice, you hold each pose for five breaths. Power yoga typically moves through the postures faster, creating a more intense physical experience and increased heart rate.
  • It builds strength: While other yoga styles may focus more on flexibility and meditation, in power yoga, you are constantly lifting and holding your body weight. This practice builds strength and endurance in the entire body, and tone and firm arm structure.
  • It leaves you feeling energized: Most yoga practice sessions leave you feeling calm, relaxed, and peaceful. Power yoga sessions tend to leave practitioners feeling calm and happy, but also energized and ready to take on challenges.

Power Fusion Yoga Classes at Red Diamond

At Red Diamond Yoga, we offer a range of well-rounded yoga classes, intelligently sequenced, with instructions that are easily followed and understood. We believe that heat should be generated from within to burn impurities and open pathways to healing. To encourage ease of movement without overheating, we warm our practice rooms to a comfortable 82° and we never add humidity to our studios. Yoga in its purest, most authentic form, generates heat from within – not externally.

Our 60-minute power fusion yoga class combines standing postures from typical hot yoga practice with elements of power yoga, including:

  • Down Dog (Downward-facing Dog): One of the most widely recognized yoga poses, down dog provides the ultimate, all-over, rejuvenating stretch. This pose serves as a mild inversion and stretches the entire back body while building strength.
  • Dolphin: The dolphin pose stretches the shoulders, hamstrings, calves, and arches of the feet. It also strengthens the arms and legs while creating length in the spine. It calms the mind and relieves stress, along with easing a variety of physical symptoms.
  • Plank: The plank is an arm-balancing yoga pose that strengthens the arms and the spine and tones the abdominal muscles. This is a truly foundational pose that teaches you to hold yourself together like a wooden plank. It builds the power needed for complex poses and the grace to glide through transitions.

Our power fusion classes have many detoxifying benefits, and builds strength and flexibility, and promotes a total body health and flexibility.
